Disability Benefits Green Paper - Our Response

“Cutting benefits makes people’s lives harder”

Disability charity Leonard Cheshire responds to the Green paper - Pathways to Work: Reforming Benefits and Support to Get Britain Working

Amy Little, Head of Advocacy at Leonard Cheshire, said:

“We're still hugely concerned that these welfare reforms are budget-driven, rather than the truly ground-breaking positive reform we all want to see. Disabled people face huge extra costs just to manage their conditions. Cutting benefits makes people’s lives harder, when making ends meet is already a daily challenge for many. Cuts of this scale undermine the potentially transformational support measures needed to help disabled people find and stay in work.

“We’ll work with disabled people, scrutinising the details and the many unknowns that are causing anxiety.

The Government must get this right before changes are introduced in 2026. Vital employment support must be shaped by the lived experience of disabled people. We know what works – tailored, personalised approaches and the removal of employment barriers. And it’s essential to invest in preventative measures such as mental health support.”
